Medical Considerations in Pediatric Dentistry

This project addresses case management of medically compromised dental patients and aims to improve dental clinical management. During the past few years, it has become increasingly difficult to access suitable patients, especially child patients, for dental students and consequently for them to be adequately experienced in treating patients with medical conditions.

Multimedia simulation provides a means to fill this gap and allows interactive learning in a non-threatening environment. A series of four modules have been developed to address four medically compromising conditions that could affect a child (congenital heart disease, diabetes, Down syndrome, cleft lip and palate) likely to be encountered by a dentist in general practice treating children. Each module contains a description and review of the condition, considerations of medical management and dental management. The student is then presented with a case scenario of a child with the condition, and simulations based on 'real-life' cases. The student selects his/her management of the case from a range of treatment options on screen, taking all information into consideration, and constructs a treatment plan and management approach.

The target group for this program is 4th year dental students in small group computer laboratory/seminar settings. Final year dental students will also be able to access it individually. The program can also be used for post-graduate students in Continuing Dental Education programs.

Curriculum Usage

Medical Considerations in Paediatric Dentistry is used in the Dentistry curriculum.

Title screen   The title screen shows icons representing the four sections of this program.

Introduction screen

This screen-grab shows the introduction screen of the congenital heart disease section.

Virtual dental room

The virtual dental room is used by the student to gather information about the patient. This virtual "room" was developed using 3D modeling software. For a softer look, the dentist, dental nurse and the patient were created using a computer paint program.

Drag and drop question

This screen-grab shows a drag and drop question.

Description of mosaicism   This diagram describes mosaicism.

Dental treatment chart

This screen simulates a dental treatment chart. The student can drag and drop treatment options and then make a comparison with an expert answer.
