Multimedia Development Roles

Project Management

The BMU has a flexible project management approach to Faculty projects. The project manager oversees the various stages of development, coordinating communication between all parties involved. With input from the development team, the project manager sets deadlines and monitors the progress of development. The BMU is currently involved with over 30 projects across the Faculty.

Educational Design

Educational design is often referred to as 'instructional design' and, in educational technology environments, typically involves organising instructional content for screen-based delivery.

Educational designers apply their knowledge of teaching and learning to the task of educational technology development. They help the development team, particularly content experts, conceptualise the instructional problem and analyse the educational goals of the program and its sections.

Educational designers work with other members of the development team to determine how best to communicate the content material given the goals and the audience of the program.

Multimedia Programming Technical Design

Sound technical design and programming are integral to the design and development of quality multimedia. Our technical designers work closely with the client, the educational designers and the rest of the design and development team to ensure the development of technically robust, highly interoperable, and educationally rich and engaging products.

Our programmers have expertise across a wide range of technologies, authoring tools, and programming languages appropriate to the development of both stand alone and web-based multimedia. For stand alone programs these include Director and Lingo programming, Flash and actionscript programming. For web-based programs these include Dreamweaver and programming in javascript, css, php, Flash and Shockwave.

Evaluation

The Biomedical Multimedia Unit advises and assists Faculty staff with the evaluation of all stages of educational technology design, development and implementation. A detailed program of formative evaluation assists staff with the refinement and improvement of educational technology programs while they are under development.

The BMU advocates user-centred summative evaluation and thus focuses on students' learning processes and outcomes in computer facilitated learning environments. A third type of evaluation - integrative - considers how educational technologies are integrated within existing teaching and learning environments.

A number of evaluation resources are provided by the BMU.
